Good evening parents,
I wanted to send out a quick update. We will be finishing our first math unit on place value and we will be starting our unit on addition. Students will be working on estimating as well. You can help out by having them estimate prices of items at the store. In reading we have finished going over character, setting and plot. We will be starting the unit on theme starting next week.
We will have a bike rodeo this week on September 3rd. The bike rodeo is part of a youth bicycle safety program that stresses the importance of always wearing a helmet when riding a bicycle. Students can ride a bicycle and they will learn about the correct ways to ride a bike safely and the best fit of helmet for their size. Please make sure your child wears clothes they feel comfortable in while riding on a bike.
I will also be sending home a long list of 70 books which is part of our first Trimester Project which will be a book report. This is a book list of 4th and 5th grade books. I allow students to pick the book they want to read, however I want to make sure I have parent approval as well. The list of books are compiled using Newberry award lists and Common Core book lists. I have read many of the books on the list, but I haven't read them all up to this date. Even though the books are considered 4th/5th grade I feel the content of the book may be at a higher level. You know how well your child can handle the emotional content of books so please keep this in mind when you approve a book. Students need to pick their top 4 favorite books. There is only 1 book per student and the first student who turns in a signed packet will get their choice of book first. There is more information about how to pick a book on the actual book list.
Thank you,
Mrs. Nunez
